HISTORY

Sophie grew up in Paris with her grandfather, Jacques Sauniere, after the death of her parents in a car accident. She was a curious child and her grandfather, the curator of the Louvre, fed that curiosity by teaching her both fluent French and English and instilling in her a value for the arts and sciences. From an early age, he encouraged her with puzzles and codes in order to foster a love for discovery that would stay with her throughout her life. He also impressed upon her how important it was to revere the sacred feminine and rose lore, something that became incredibly important with her discovery that she and her lost brother were the sole descendants of the line of Jesus and Mary Magdelene.

As much as she loved her grandfather, her witnessing of a secret ritual to the sacred feminine shattered her trust of him as a young woman and she stopped speaking to him for ten years. She was trained in Britain for cryptology and returned to her native France to work as an agent in the Cryptology department of the DCPJ. She is very happy in this job until the murder of her grandfather.

The death of Jacques Sauniere puts into motion a series of events that leads Sophie and an American symbologist, Robert Langdon, into a quest to uncover the secret of the Priory of Sion before the ultra conservative Catholic group Opus Dei covers up all knowledge of the sacred feminine and Mary Magdelene forever. It is this course of events that challenges Sophie like she's never been challenged before, leading her to realize the one thing that she has been missing her entire life: the secret behind her own family.

Sophie enters Tabula Rasa after the events in The Da Vinci Code while she and Robert Langdon are in Florence.

PERSONALITY

Sophie Neveu is the type of woman who not only survives in a man's world, but rises above the standards that society puts upon and woman and a "woman's" station. She's curious, a curiosity that stems from childhood but continued to grow and is now an integral part of both her personality and her calling: cryptology. Sophie is a woman who truly loves her profession and treats it as a calling and not a job.

This curiosity, coupled with high intelligence, makes her a tricky woman and definitely someone you want on your side if you're running from the law or trying to solve a puzzle. She has an intense love for her family, both her dead parents and her grandfather, but her need for trust can sometimes overshadow that. Truth and honesty, two of the qualities she values most, often become stumbling blocks as her occupation and life are full of secrets not meant to be revealed. This dissonance can sometimes leave her confused and cause her to lose trust in those that she loves best.
